Arsenal have reportedly been deterred from pursuing a transfer for Jhon Duran due to concerns surrounding his attitude, according to former Aston Villa scout Mick Brown. Brown, who has extensive connections at Villa Park and experience from his time at Tottenham and Manchester United, disclosed this information exclusively to Football Insider.
Despite the 20-year-old striker recently signing a new six-year contract with Aston Villa, extending his commitment to the club until 2030, Arsenal had shown interest in acquiring him as part of their search for a new centre-forward. However, Duran's past off-pitch issues have raised concerns within Arsenal's recruitment team, leading them to explore other options.
Mikel Arteta is determined to recruit players who exemplify the right mentality, having previously removed individuals he deemed to be negative influences from the squad. Brown noted, “There were concerns among backroom staff at Villa that Duran is a difficult character,” which contributed to speculation about his potential exit.
Though Unai Emery's guidance has positively influenced Duran's development at Villa and eased some concerns about his attitude, Brown highlighted that the initial apprehensions have persisted at other interested clubs, including Arsenal. He stated, “Those concerns at Villa seem to have been brushed under the carpet because he’s had a fantastic season and committed to a big new deal. But there are lingering doubts about that attitude which have put them off.”
Even with Duran’s impressive performances for Aston Villa this season, Arsenal remain cautious about his fit within their squad, reflecting the importance Arteta places on team harmony and character.
