Ipswich Town have finalised a £21 million transfer for winger Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa, concluding the agreement on Wednesday evening. The 22-year-old had attracted interest from several clubs, including Everton, but Ipswich acted swiftly to secure his services. Following discussions with Kieran McKenna, the manager at Portman Road, Philogene has agreed to the move, marking a significant step for both the player and the club.
Philogene is expected to undergo a medical examination on Thursday, which will officially end his second stint at Aston Villa, the club where he began his career. He rejoined Villa just six months ago on a five-year contract after transferring from Hull City. At that time, Villa had outbid Ipswich for his signature, having received permission from Hull to match any offers made for the promising winger.
The player has a limited history with Villa in the Premier League, having made three appearances for the club prior to his recent loan spell at Hull. His time at Hull was notably productive, as he netted 12 goals in 32 Championship matches, further showcasing his potential following earlier loan spells with Cardiff and Stoke.
Upon his return to Villa in July, Philogene expressed his feelings, stating it felt like he was "back home." However, under the management of Unai Emery, he has struggled to make a significant impact, failing to score or assist in 15 appearances. This season, he has managed just two starts in the Premier League and was notably absent from the squad during December fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City.
Ipswich Town are optimistic that Philogene can rediscover his form as they aim for promotion to the Premier League as the season progresses. In addition to Philogene, the club has confirmed a loan deal for Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey, who is eager for more first-team opportunities after making only a solitary substitute appearance in Serie A since his summer transfer. These strategic signings illustrate Ipswich's commitment to strengthening their squad in preparation for the challenges that lie ahead.
