Jhon Duran has dismissed speculation regarding a potential transfer to Arsenal, affirming his commitment to Aston Villa and his optimism about achieving significant success under head coach Unai Emery. The 20-year-old striker has played a secondary role to Ollie Watkins for much of his time at Villa Park, but his recent performances have made him a standout player this season.
Recent reports, including those from Metro.co.uk, suggest that Duran's future was a topic of interest, particularly following an unsuccessful £30 million bid from West Ham that also included teenage midfielder Lewis Orford. Duran has made a notable impact this season, scoring eight goals in just 14 appearances, despite starting only three games, which has garnered interest from top clubs such as Barcelona and Arsenal. However, Aston Villa remains calm about the situation, having recently secured Duran's contract extension until 2030 and indicating they would only consider offers exceeding £75 million.
On the subject of the transfer speculation, Duran told Sky Sports, "Yes, I think there were rumours. As a young man, the head goes to other places. But there was always total support from Unai, from [president of football operations] Monchi, and above all from Damian [Vidagany, director of football operations]." He further expressed his gratitude for their support: "They have achieved many things in a short time, and they have helped me a lot. I think that helps, in a way, the mind, and now it's different."
Despite facing challenges related to his playing time, Duran has remained focused on his development and learning from Emery. He stated, "I feel very happy to be here with him, to share the space with him, to learn from his teachings. He wants to teach me all the time." Duran has acknowledged occasional disagreements with Emery, but he views these as part of his growth as a player.
Duran also draws inspiration from football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic, saying, "I love him for his personality, his self-confidence, his scoring ability, his temper on the pitch." He aspires to embrace a unique approach to football and life: "Why be like everyone if you can be different?"
Looking ahead, Duran is eager to prove himself as Villa prepares to face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend. After a strong start to the Premier League season, Aston Villa currently sits fourth in the table and aims to build on their momentum.
