Kenza Dali Set to Join San Diego Wave from Aston Villa

Aston Villa's Kenza Dali is preparing for a transfer to San Diego Wave in the NWSL, expressing her emotional farewell to the club.

Aston Villa's attacking midfielder Kenza Dali is poised for a significant transition as she prepares to join San Diego Wave in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). The 33-year-old French international was notably absent from Villa's recent squad during their Women's Super League (WSL) draw against Everton, a match she attended in person at Merseyside. Reports indicate that Dali is expected to travel to the United States this week to finalise the transfer.

In a poignant social media post on Sunday, Dali expressed her feelings about departing Villa, stating, "I still feel that I wasn't able to give everything I had for the club. I wish I could have done more. It is with a heavy heart that I am leaving the club but felt like it is a decision I needed to make." This heartfelt message underscores her emotional connection to the club and her desire to have made a more significant impact during her tenure.

Dali's playing time has notably decreased this season, particularly under the management of Robert de Pauw, which has led to discussions with San Diego Wave amid the interim leadership of Shaun Goater at Villa. Since her transfer from Everton in August 2022, Dali has made a commendable impact, netting nine goals in 66 appearances for the Midlands club.

San Diego Wave, a formidable presence in the NWSL, is currently under the management of Jonas Eidevall, who took charge earlier this year following Casey Stoney’s departure. With the NWSL season set to commence on 14 March, Dali's arrival is anticipated to enhance the Wave's attacking capabilities.

The developments surrounding Dali's transfer are indicative of a broader transformation within the Aston Villa squad, reflecting the club's evolving strategy and the challenges faced in the WSL. As reported by the BBC, her move to the Wave not only marks a new chapter in her career but also highlights the ongoing shifts in women's football, where players are increasingly seeking opportunities across various leagues worldwide.
