Fabio Capello Highlights Joshua Zirkzee's Adjustment Struggles at Manchester United

Former England manager Fabio Capello sheds light on Joshua Zirkzee's difficulties adapting to the Premier League tempo since his arrival at Manchester United from Bologna.

Former England manager Fabio Capello believes that Joshua Zirkzee, the summer signing for Manchester United, has been taken aback by the tempo of the Premier League. The Red Devils secured Zirkzee from Bologna in a transfer worth a reported £36.5 million as they sought to bolster support for Rasmus Hojlund up front. However, the Netherlands international has faced challenges adapting to life at Old Trafford, scoring just one goal and providing one assist in 12 appearances this season.

Capello commented on Zirkzee's struggles following Bologna's encounters with English teams in the Champions League, including matches against Liverpool and Aston Villa. He stated, “After Bologna's defeat at Aston Villa, I asked [Bologna manager] Italiano [Vincenzo] what impression he had of the two English teams he faced immediately, Aston Villa and Liverpool. They run, they go faster, they have a different pace.” He elaborated on Zirkzee’s situation, emphasising the difference in pressure players experience in England compared to Serie A.

Despite the difficulties, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag remains hopeful about Zirkzee's potential. He recently stated, “Yes, I do [think he can become a prolific goalscorer for United]. Sure, he is young. We see his great abilities. He is a very good link-up player... he can definitely improve.”

Reports indicate that Juventus is interested in acquiring Zirkzee on loan, but the 23-year-old intends to remain with Manchester United. Additionally, former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor expressed concerns about Zirkzee's current form, suggesting he struggles to control the ball. With the January transfer window approaching, there are speculations regarding Zirkzee's future at the club, amid considerations by Manchester United to seek alternatives.

As the 2024/2025 season progresses, Manchester United will look to address these challenges and support Zirkzee in reaching his potential.
